Testogel Sachets for Male TRT: An Expert Guide

This comprehensive guide aims to inform you on what Testogel is, how it works and how to use it safely.

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a widely used treatment for men with hypogonadism. This is a condition where there are low testosterone levels within the body and is colloquially referred to as “male menopause”. If your own body isn’t producing enough testosterone, you may benefit from having a supplement of lab-made testosterone. Men and women can both experience low testosterone however this guide is only relevant for adult males. One of the most common versions of TRT that e-surgery provides is Testogel and this guide will explain its benefits, risks and how to use it safely.

What is Testogel?

Testogel is a clear, colourless gel infused with testosterone which is the main male sex hormone. Low testosterone levels can negatively affect males in multiple ways this can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Reduced Libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of Muscle
  • Poor concentration or memory

At E-surgery, the gel can be provided in two different forms: single dose sachets or as a pump. Both of which are applied to clean, dry skin, usually on the shoulders, upper arms or abdomen. After the gel dries on the skin, it is slowly absorbed into the blood at a steady pace providing men with a consistent level of the hormone. The gel dries fast and absorbs quickly into the skin.

How does Testogel work?

Testogel aims to compensate for your body’s low testosterone levels. Once the gel is rubbed onto the epidermal(uppermost) layer of skin, it is absorbed into the lower layers of the skin where it is safely and slowly dissolved into the bloodstream allowing it to deliver testosterone to the rest of your body. This will provide you with enough testosterone for the next 24 hours before you need to reapply another dose of gel.

What are the benefits of Testogel?

Testogel has many advantages.

  1. Convenience:
    • The gel is easy to apply and can come in pre-measured sachets for precise dosing.
  2. Non-Invasive:
    • Unlike TRT injections, Testogel is pain-free and does not require needles. If you would like to know more about other methods of TRT, read e-Surgery’s ultimate guide to TRT.
  3. Mimics Natural Hormone Level Fluctuance:
    • It provides a controlled release of testosterone that fades during the day which is like a male’s natural circadian rhythm (men naturally have higher testosterone levels in the morning compared to nighttime!)
  4. Improved Symptoms:
    • Regular use can restore energy levels, enhance libido, improve mood, and increase muscle mass.
  5. Bone Health:
    • Low testosterone levels can weaken muscles over time, Testogel increases testosterone, so it helps maintain bone density, reducing the risk of fractures.

What are the risks of Testogel?

  • Side effects
  • If you use the recommended dose, side effects should be very few. This is because testosterone gel aims to restore testosterone. We have listed some important and common side effects as listed on the BNF and the Testogel medication leaflets.
  • Skin Reactions (redness, rashes, hives, dry or stinging skin)
  • Headaches
  • Prostatic issues (difficulty, frequent or pain when urinating)
  • Mood changes
  • High blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia
  • Heightened senses
  • Change in bowel habits.
  • Serious complications
  • These are extremely rare however they must be mentioned.
        1. Jaundice, also known as, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
        2. painful swelling of one leg or sudden change in colour of the skin, breathlessness, sudden unexplained cough which may bring up blood, or sudden chest pain, severe light headedness or dizziness, severe pain in your stomach, sudden loss of vision which can all be signs of a blood clot.
  • Transfer to others
      • As this gel is applied to the skin, it is recommended that you wash your hands thoroughly after rubbing onto skin as it can be transferred onto others before it dries properly.
  • Doping
    • NHS advises that Atheletes must be warned before starting this medication as it may cause false positives on doping tests.

Although the risks of Testogel can look scary it is important to note that most people will not experience any side effects or complications of this gel. Most side effects can often be managed with a dose adjustment.

How to use Testogel safely.

Testogel is designed to be convenient and easy to administer. Testogel is applied once daily at about the same time, preferably in the morning.

  1. Clean and dry the area you decide to apply your Testogel (this can be the shoulders, upper arms, abdomen or thighs)
  2. Choose one single sachet of Testogel and ensure that it is the right dose and check that the gel is not expired. (If you have a pump, use no more than the number of pumps recommended by your doctor.)
  3. Apply the gel onto the chosen area of skin and rub until a thin layer has formed.
  4. Wait for the gel to dry (up to 5 minutes)
  5. Wash your hands with soap and water to make sure you don’t transfer the Testogel to someone else.
  6. The area the gel is on should not be washed for 4-5 hours.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose. Do not double up doses. If you use too much, wash the excessive portion off with soap and water. Contact your doctor as high testosterone levels can cause serious side effects.

Next Steps:

In summary, Testogel can be an effective and convenient solution for low testosterone levels but it’s important to understand the risks, side effects and considerations involved. It’s also important to mention that lifestyle changes can make a massive impact on testosterone levels as well, the NHS advises that poor diet, lack of sleep or exercise as well as smoking and drinking can reduce testosterone levels.
